The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks a Clinical Instructor to join our Cyberlaw Clinic team. The position reports to the Managing Director of the Harvard Law School Cyberlaw Clinic, which is based at the Berkman Klein Center.
The Clinical Instructor’s primary responsibility will be to supervise, manage, mentor, and teach Harvard Law School students enrolled in the Clinic as they represent clients in a variety of challenging matters, including in the areas of intellectual property; digital civil liberties; privacy and security; new media and online speech; government innovation; and online safety.
The substance of the Clinical Instructor’s work will vary from matter to matter, but may include overseeing students in their counselling of clients; drafting of contracts, licenses and other transactional documents; preparation of amicus briefs, comments and other filings; and support for policy advocacy efforts.
The Clinical Instructor will meet regularly with students to direct and supervise their work, observe students in client interactions, review students’ written and other work product, provide regular and detailed feedback to students on their projects and performance, deliver instruction in basic legal skills and Internet-related practice, and ensure professional, high-quality representation of Clinic clients.
The Clinical Instructor will help develop new Cyberlaw Clinic cases and clients consistent with the Instructor’s own areas of interest and expertise, and maintain relationships with the Clinic’s existing clients and external partners. They will also assist the Managing Director with the administration of the Clinic’s practice and teaching operations.
The Clinical Instructor will be part of the intellectual community at the Berkman Center and will have the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences at the Center and at Harvard Law School and will have frequent opportunities to expand their knowledge of technology and law.

Candidates must have received their Juris Doctor degree within the past 3 years with (a) admission to the Massachusetts bar or (b) admission to and active status in at least one U.S. state bar and immediate eligibility for admission on motion to the Massachusetts bar. A minimum of 3-5 years legal-practice experience in one or more of the Clinic’s areas of focus is required.
Candidates should be energetic and passionate about working on a variety of technology law and policy issues. Top academic credentials, superior writing and verbal skills, sound judgment, exceptional ethical standards, and proven abilities in interpersonal communication, supervision, and team building are required.
Expertise in counselling start-ups, conducting legal risk assessments, and in drafting contracts, licenses, and other transactional documents (especially relating to IP and privacy rights) is preferred. Previous experience in a clinical legal setting or the direct supervision and mentoring of young attorneys is highly desirable. A strong technical background or prior technical experience is advantageous but not required.
The Clinical Instructor position is a benefit-eligible, full-time term appointed position, currently expected to continue for 2 years subject to department needs and funding with the possibility of renewal based on funding and business need. The Cyberlaw Clinic Managing Director will consider applications on a rolling basis.
